As we’re coming up to holiday time with many of us going abroad I felt it right to review this handy little app from the makers of WorldCard Mobile. The idea is simple – point your phone at some text and it translates it for you. Use it for street signs, hotel brochures, restaurant menu’s – basically anything hat needs translating. Now, I’m actually very sceptical with things like this, it just sounds too good to be true. I am pleased, however, to report that it does actually work very well.

There are some caveats though; It doesn’t work well when moving (which rules out the street sign example in their AppStore images) although you can use it to scan text from a saved photo. It also only translates one word at a time so translating a full sentence not only takes a while, the grammar may be slightly inaccurate. You can, however, get a good idea of what you are reading.

To get a translation from what is in front of you simply line up the cross-hairs above the word you want to translate. A confirmation will show on screen as to what the app has read and also the translated version. Using a saved photo you simply tap each word, it highlights the word if thinks you selected, and then offers the translation. You can choose from 24 different languages in the app and these are being increased gradually. The latest update added 4 or 5 new languages too. If either of these methods ail for some reason you can also search for a translation by typing in the word manually.

It could be a useful app, it certainly works very well at detecting an translating words and is priced at a reasonable £2.99 ($4.99). There is one major flaw though – the translations need a data connection. Most people, myself included, turn off roaming data when abroad as the costs are simply extortionate. If you do decide to use the app abroad then expect to pay quite a bit for data usage or pray for a WiFi hotspot!

The default calendar app on the iPhone works well. That is until you have used the £1.19 app, Week Calendar. “It’s just a calendar app” I hear you say; well, yes, it is. But a Ferrari is also “just a car”.

With iOS 4, Apple gave developers access to the iPhone calendar(s) which gives us our first major praise: ALL your calendars, events, alarms, birthdays etc are already available in Week Calendar from the moment you launch it.

Also, any changes you make in the app are automatically added to the normal Calendar app too. So, basically by using the app you are not affecting any of your existing calendars in a bad way – by that I mean you won’t need to add events to 2 calendars while you decide which you want to use.

So, what makes Week Calendar worth spending your hard earned cash on if it just uses the normal iPhone calendar as it’s backbone?

Well, here are the ‘extra bits’:

Week view: as the app’s name suggests, Week Calendar gives you a ‘week view’ option not available in the normal Calendar app.

Improved month view: Month view is slightly more compressed and leaves you with more space at the bottom for the selected days events. This is particularly noticeable in 5-week months where the normal Calendar app will leave 1 1/2 lines for events, Week Calendar gives you 2 3/4. Also, in the normal Calendar app in month view you are shown a single ‘dot’ if there are any events. Week Calendar goes a step further – you get a dot for each event and, not only that, they are colour-coded according to the calendar colour. So you can easily see that there are three events on a particular day, one of them being in the ‘Public Holidays’ calendar.

Landscape view & swipe to next: On all views you can use the app in landscape. You can also swipe left/right to move to the next/previous day, week or month.

Jump to date: One of my major issues with the normal Calendar app is not being able to jump to a specific date. If I want to check holiday dates for next year I have to click the little arrow numerous times. With Week Calendar you can ‘Go to day’ and very quickly choose your day, month and year to jump to. Or you can

Event management: On week and day views if you tap on any event you get a flyout giving more details and even icons signifying if it is repeated and if it has an alarm set. You can then jump to the full details page where you have your usual options of editing / deleting and seeing the alarm times. You can also drag and drop events to adjust their times and also copy and paste to new times if you want to duplicate an entry. If you want to delete an event you simply select it and press the ‘Trashcan’ button – no more viewing the details, pressing edit and then scrolling down to delete…

Improved event addition: When you add an event you can choose a custom colour for that particular event regardless of the preset calendar colour. You can also set custom alarms so if you want a 3min and a 3days 1hr 17min warning then you can.

Birthdays: iOS4 added birthdays into the Calendar app but it’s not very helpful as you then need to open up Contacts, find the person, check the date of birth and then work out how old they are. Week Calendar does all this for you – the persons age is shown in the detail of the entry. So simple, yet so useful! You can even ‘Go to day’ a few years ahead and see how old they will be on that birthday!

Event sharing: with Week Calendar you can ‘share’ an event via email. This creates a new email with a .ics attachment that you can use with various other Calendar clients.

MobileMe: I use MobileMe to sync my calendars (among other things) and all this happens in the background. I had initially worried that I would need to open up the actual Calendar app in order for the syncs to take place, however this is not the case. Any new events or edits made in Week Calendar when the normal Calendar app was completely (forced) closed still appeared on my MacBok Pro’s Calendar.

Other features include options and settings for customising daytime hours, the day for the start of the week, whether to darken weekends, font size, colour schemes, time intervals, scrolling options, icon badges and many more things!

So, with Week Calendar, there really is no need to use the default Calendar app. If only Apple had made such a useful Calendar app in the first place… Regardless, the small price is nothing when you think of all the extra features you get in such a well written, well presented app.

Business cards may appear old hat but they are still very much the defacto option for passing on contact details.

After a CES, CeBIT or IFA event I will have hundreds of the blighters all of which need recording.

Perhaps you are the organised type who religiously inputs business card contact details into your address book or maybe you are like me and carefully store all the business cards you gather in various drawers, briefcases and laptop bags!

Whichever ‘type’ you are, the WorldCard Mobile app from PenPowerInc may prove to be very useful indeed.

With this iPhone app you can snap a photo of a business card using the iPhone camera and it will then use OCR technology to locate and identify the key information and then export them to your address book.

Or at least that is the promise…..

In practice I found it was never 100% successful. Understandably, the type of business card had a huge bearing on the success rate. In many cases there were so many errors that it would have been far quicker to manually input the information myself.

Where information was recognised and converted successfully it was correctly linked with the right contact fields. However, all too often information was not recognised correctly and the result was gobbledygook. For testing I was using an iPhone 4 whose camera one would hope was up to the job of producing a clear crisp photo.

Business cards with fancy backgrounds, clever design themes or unusual layouts would confuse the app. The simpler the card, the better the results.

On the plus side, using the app was simplicity itself. An on screen guide shows you how to position the business card (with both portrait and landscape formats supported) and you can further assist the app by defining which areas of the card contain text that needs to be converted. The end result can be edited before export.

One other nice feature is the ability to capture information from an email signature for import, this worked very well.

If the app was more successful at actually scanning cards then it could be a real time saver. The user interface is clear and simple. Let’s hope that PenPowerInc can work on the OCR issues for a future update.

At £3.49 our advice is that you try the free LITE version to see if it works for you before you commit to buying.
