Apple don’t allow gambling in the AppStore so Spin3 got around this by creating one of the slickest Web Apps I’ve seen on the iPhone! Promoting their web apps and upcoming iPhone app (see later) at MWC in Barcelona it is clear that they are a gaming force to be reckoned with. Put simply it looks like Flash but we all know Apple don’t ‘do’ Flash – don’t believe me? Then head over to i.spin3.com on your iPhone and take a flutter for yourself.
Having worked with Ladbrokes and 777mobile.com, among others, they know a thing or two about online gambling and it would be safe to say they know what they’re doing.
If you’re not so keen on the ‘play for real’ games then you will be pleased to know that they will soon be releasing a ‘play for fun’ iPhone app of Blackjack and this is currently in the Apple review process.
From the makers of the awesome iPhone game Edge, Mobigames has released a new hit called Cross Fingers. A highly polished game as you would expect from this design house. http://www.mobigame.net/
I have been playing this game for about two weeks now an I have to admit it is addictive, and like it’s predecessor I can imagine it’ll be some time before I put it down.
The tasks are quite simple move the blocks into the dark area of the board and make them fit. Some of the puzzles are way too easy and some are much harder, but I was a little disappointed not to have any really fiendish puzzles to get my teeth into. This is offset by an immensely difficult and infuriating Arcade mode but lack of variety here makes for a short-lived experience.
This app is a real finger frenzy with some of the puzzles requiring the use of five fingers on the screen at once which for the older iPod touch is a little too much to handle but on the iPhone the issue is just how dextrous your fingers are. I did really like this app as I like puzzle games and the polish of this app is evident however it lacks depth that some might hope for and can be played to completion in only a few days, but for .59p it is still a bargain and one I wish to hope will have some updated levels soon.
Released shortly after the surge of zombie-based games that plagued the AppStore around Halloween, Westbright’s ‘Zombies’ breathes a breath of fresh air and comedy into a somewhat stale genre.
Zombies is a turn-based game where your aim is to, rather unsurprisingly, kill the zombies. This is not, however, the usual gore-laden shooter commonly associated with zombie games but, rather, an amusing little gem that is so addictive in it’s simplicity. How many other zombie-based games have the lead character saying in their best British accent ‘oh dear’ when devoured by the living dead?!
Canabalt is one of those rare games that have a simple premise but gameplay that has you coming back time after time.
I first heard of the game through a post on Twitter and in a rare display of how confident the authors are in the game, they have a flash demo you can play on their web site.
Give it a go, it demonstrates the simple but utterly addictive gameplay better than any description I could give it using mere words. You start as a small pixelated figure in a building being attacked by some rampaging enemy. The side scrolling game has you running along floors and across the roof’s of buildings and the only control you have is a tap of the screen to jump.
And jump you must if you wish to survive. You need to jump obstacles in your path, jump the gaps between buildings and jump explosions etc.
We recently review Team 17’s Worms for iPhone and are now happy to announce that the handful of ‘issues’ that we had have now been fixed in a recent update, along with a bunch of other bugs that we didn’t even notice existed! It is available now in the AppStore here.
Major improvements:
The option to change graphical settings for increased performance in game on 1G and 3G devices.
More responsive camera controls, including the ability to make the camera zoom further in for a closer look at the action.
The ability to flip the game screen based on the orientation of your device.
Improved Ninja Rope controls allowing even more death-defying rope stunts.
The ability to unleash devastating weapons on your enemies from the safety of a parachute.
Shorter thinking times of AI players.
Highly improved back-flip and jump controls, including a new finger swipe method for back-flip to make sure you never accidentally jump worms into the water again.
The facility to customise the game even further by creating your own enemy teams.
General performance increases across the board.
Quick shortcut to zoom out/in quickly with a press of the top left corner.
Many, many years ago (far too many if I’m honest) I had worms. Not those worms, but the game, Worms, on the SNES; and I loved it! Thirteen years later and after various new editions and versions for different consoles, Worms has finally hit the AppStore. Not only has it hit it but it has been number 1 in the top 25 Apps for a number of days. Needless to say I was excited when I saw it had been released and quickly purchased the app. So, after a few days of playing and testing, does it live up to the hype? Does it warrant being the number 1 app? Read on to find out!

Ah DOOM, for anyone of a certain age that name will bring memories flooding back.
DOOM was the first true first person shoot ‘em up and whilst the graphics may seem poor now, 16 years ago it was revolutionary.
Now DOOM has made its first appearance on the iPhone. The game authors, ID Software, have chosen an unusual approach which has received mixed reviews from gamers.
Instead of being allowed to roam freely around the game map, DOOM Resurrection uses a control system which has you on virtual ‘rails’. Your progress through each level being pre-defined for simplicity of control. Continue reading »
Let me start with a simple clear statement. Real Racing is the best racing game available on the iPhone bar none. There I said it.
Real Racing may even be the best racing game available on any handheld games console to date, it really is that good.
Firemint have hit the iPhone platform with titles that are so good, coding teams at other games publishers are now re-considering their future careers! FlightControl, Firemint’s first title has been a massive hit and Real Racing will I predict be even bigger.
A quick summary of some of the key features of Real Racing are:
36 cars, three classes, a dozen unique tracks and five game modes
Three divisions to play through
Massive career mode with 57 events to complete
Six cars on screen
Touch or tilt to steer, Manual or automatic acceleration and braking
In-car cockpit view or external camera
Local multiplayer over WiFi, Online league play, Online leaderboards
As soon as you fire up the game you will be struck by just how good the graphics are, the visual scenery is highly detailed and you get sunlight, clouds and even lens flare as you drive towards the sun.
Once launched and after the opening titles you will be presented with the menu screen, in this case a race car in the pit. All the options and features are accessed from here.
You can dip straight in and have a quick race, or perhaps try and improve your times on the track with a time trial. But for most of you it will be the career and Connected options that are played the most.
Firemint have deployed their Cloudcell technology to power the on-line leagues. Multi-player is restricted to local WLAN games which was an initial disappointment but you can compete in on-line leagues and compare your scores which adds to the enjoyment and has you trying to better your scores time after time. Firemint’s Real Racing game has hit the Appstore and it’s a beauty.
We’ll be giving this a few laps today whilst we await the Keynote announcements later today (6pm UK).
It is a measure of just how good it is though, that having launched it in order to grab a few quick screen-shots for this post and I instead found myself battling through an entire race. You really do have to play it in order to appreciate just how good this is given it is running on a phone!
I haven’t had a chance as yet to explore the myriad of options but the in-car drivers eye view, auto acceleration and tilt steering work very well and you’ll be power sliding through the corners in no time at all.
