Posimotion Helix gaming grip

Posimotion Helix gaming grip

One of my concerns with the iPhone and games is that is is possible to get a little too enthusiastic and when things hot up the iPhone becomes a little slippery. Couples with that is the difficulty of making accurate and fast taps on the screen and you have a recipe for disaster: a dropped iPhone…

Posimotion have overcome these fears with the $19.99 Helix gaming grip. This is basically a steering wheel style of holder allowing you to keep a good hold on your device and improves the tactile input whilst playing games. The design of the Helix is such that the iPhone can be installed in both portrait or landscape modes.

Back in February at MWC in Barcelona we met up with Powermat to see their range of solutions for wireless charging of all sorts of devices (iPhones, Blackberrys, Nintendo DS and iPods, among others). Perhaps most importantly, we have since got hold of some review samples of the Powermat, iPhone case, iPod dock and PowerCube. I’ve been using the whole lot for the last few weeks and can now share with the world the joys (and few low points) of the Powermat system. Continue reading »

Most of the news surrounding the pending release of OS4 has focused on the major updates like multitasking and app folders. Admittedly, these are nice features (although as a 3G owner I don’t get to play with multitasking) but there are a number of others that seem to have been overlooked. There are also a number of bugs but it’s beta software so they should be expected and, as such, I won’t bother writing about them!

Having played with the 3G version of OS4 for a few days there are a few new features that are quite small but are really useful. Continue reading »

If you haven’t seen these then basically they comprise of a Powermat (charging station) and some kind of adapted device to allow it to get charged by the Powermat. The adaptation, initially, was an external case for the iPhone or a new backing for some of the Blackberry devices. They have since added a huge range of products to their line so you can charge digital cameras, smart phones, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, iPod etc. Some of these require the Powercube which contains various adapters to plug into your device (so not really wireless anymore but at least it means less chargers to carry with you!). iTunes LogoMy 5th generation iPod and it’s predecessor the Creative Zen Xtra both have/had a great feature that I used practically every day. This feature, Album Shuffle, was ideal for someone like myself who prefers to listen to a whole album as it was released rather than just a random song. I also have a number of live recordings that need to be played in order. Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decided to disable the shuffle by album feature in both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Did you notice how I say ‘disable’ and not ‘remove’? The feature is present in the .plist file for Settings.app but this is only available to jailbroken phones and those with access to Xcode – which dramatically reduces the number of people it is available to. It also requires connecting to a Mac every time you want to change your shuffle mode from ‘by album’ to ‘by track’ so is no good when you’re on the road.

So, what are the other options? Well, as Apple rightly advertise: ‘There’s an App for That’ although in this case there are 3 that do the job and are currently available in the UK AppStore. In alphabetical order we have: ‘Album Mixer – Shuffle by Album‘, ‘iAlbum Player‘ and ‘Quick Music‘.

Zombies for iPhone and iPod TouchReleased shortly after the surge of zombie-based games that plagued the AppStore around Halloween, Westbright’s ‘Zombies’ breathes a breath of fresh air and comedy into a somewhat stale genre.

Zombies is a turn-based game where your aim is to, rather unsurprisingly, kill the zombies. This is not, however, the usual gore-laden shooter commonly associated with zombie games but, rather, an amusing little gem that is so addictive in it’s simplicity. How many other zombie-based games have the lead character saying in their best British accent ‘oh dear’ when devoured by the living dead?!

night-stand-iconIs this evidence of Apple’s controversial Killswitch in action?

Please note this now appears to be a bug which is being fixed.

A recent app that I, like many others, bought on the AppStore with real money appears to have suddenly stopped working. A simple application called Night Stand, which is now copied by other app developers in true AppStore style, designed to simply display the time and alarm while dimming the screen. Not exactly a controversial app to say the least and has been available for some time! Now it seems that you can load the app but it simply won’t run.

This app has also been tested on a colleagues phone with the same results. This is not as a result of any updates as it was seen to work recently and, stranger still, the app has been pulled from the AppStore itself. As of this moment I have not yet been able to find any reason for it’s disappearance, but am more concerned about the fact that any app can seemingly be pulled from your device without warning or reason.

I paid good money for that app, all be it 59 pence but it is mine, or is it?

blacksn0w2 The amazing geohot has done it again. This guy has more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body. His latest achievement is to have unlocked the iphone’s 05:11:07 Baseband. This is particularly important to those iphone users who want to jailbreak and unlock their iphones who accidentally updated their phones to the 3.1.2 firmware and lost the unlock.

Now through a stinging attack on the unlocking community Geohot is calling for information warfare on all the sites and sellers (SCUM) who continue to sell his and the Dev Teams freeware Software to unsuspecting users.
This was started in his recent blog posted at http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/ where he publicly refused the $10,000 reward offered for the development of the unlock on the ground of his own integrity. Good on you! He is calling on all to inform the public that they should never have to buy any unlocking software as it will always remain FREE from the Dev Team and Geohot, and the more people who know this the less of a market these scum will have. So read his article, and pass it on!

  • Resolves sporadic issues that may cause iPhone not to wake from sleep
  • Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
  • Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

The update is available from iTunes in the usual way!
