I’ve been following the progress of Adonit ever since they launched their Writer project on Kickstarter. Although I already have a ZAGGMate keyboard it’s not perfect, it doesn’t protect the iPad fully and is a little cumbersome to deploy.

When I first saw Adonit’s solution it seemed to be much closer to my ideal. A folding BlueTooth Keyboard combined into a clever folio style design that allows for screen angle adjustment , easy removal and full protection when closed. But, by the time Adonit had launched Writer for iPad, I had upgraded to an iPad 2 and so I was forced to wait a little longer whilst they re-tooled.

And so I was delighted to hear that they were pulling out all the stops and to get the iPad2 version into production in as quickly as possible. It launched last week, I placed my order and 4-days later I received it. Not bad considering it was shipped from Taiwan and our beloved Royal Mail struggle to deliver my first class post in the same time frame. Another very pleasant surprise was that Adonit charged a flat $35.00 for UK shipping with no extra fees and no nasty customs bill.

The design is simple and ingenious (as all the best solutions are). Consisiting of an outer soft case with a soft suede lining, a flexible plastic frame for the iPad, and the BlueTooth Keyboard, connected to the frame by a folding hinge. The outer case has magnets which secure the base of the keyboard at any position you desire. By sliding the keyboard forwards and backwards you can control the angle of the screen. The iPad pops in and out of the frame very easily and all the ports are accessible whilst it is fitted. All good so far.

Adonit have also taken full advantage of the iPad2 features and so the iPad and keyboard will power off when the Writer is closed, a feature that was not available on the original iPad version and proof that Adonit haven’t just rushed out the same design for iPad2- nice one.

Set-up is simple and straightforward. Anyone who has used an Apple Wireless keyboard will be familiar with how the batteries are fitted. Pop off the end cap of the ‘barrel’ between screen and keyboard and you find the space where the 3 x AAA’s (not supplied) live. The Writer can use rechargeable AAA’s but has no facility to charge them in-situ. Press the power button located at the other end until it flashes to initiate BT Pairing mode and pair as you would any other BT device. Adonit claim that 5hrs of typing per day should yield a month of use from a set of alkaline batteries with that time being extended if your usage of the keyboard is less.

The keyboard is, by necessity, small but not overly so. Most of the keys are well placed and there are dedicated buttons for Home, Screen On/Off, Show/Hide on-screen keyboard and volume controls. The keys are a little spongy but I’m still able to type at a reasonable speed. They’re certainly better than the keys fitted to a Netbook that I own. My only very minor gripes are the right-hand shift key is very small and the Screen On/Off button is located directly above the Delete key where it gets pressed rather too often whilst I get to grips with the writer!

Another plus of Adonit’s design is it will sit on your knee and balance perfectly, something ZAGGMates’s keyboard could not do being very top heavy.

For those of you who are asking why I would want to go to all the trouble and expense of buying a keyboard for an iPad, rather than using a laptop, my reasoning is this. I frequently travel to trade shows for which I need to be able to blog and report on the go. Previously I have had to cart a MacBook around and, as the days are long, I also need to carry the power supply. That’s quite a heavy package to have to lug around the show floors. It means I need to carry a laptop bag and have to find power at least once during the day and wait whilst it re-charges.

Earlier this year I experimented with the lightest possible solution when I travelled to MWC in Barcelona. Armed only with my iPad and ZAGGmate keyboard, not only was I able to perform all the functions that I needed but the battery lasted a full day of work without need of a re-charge, it was considerably lighter and far more convenient. I didn’t need a bag of any sort, carrying the iPad in my hand. The difference was notable, the reduction in weight reduced my fatigue and gave my shoulder a rest and not having to keep one eye on the battery level gauge was liberating.

So the Adonit Writer is, for me, perfect. Currently on sale at $99.99, it is always going to be aimed at a niche set of users for whom a keyboard will be useful, but it’s superbly designed, works perfectly and makes me a very happy chap. It would be equally useful to journalists, bloggers writers, anyone who has a need to write more than the odd email or Tweet but does not want to have to lug a laptop around.

The idea is simple – point your phone at some text and it translates it for you. Use it for street signs, hotel brochures, restaurant menu’s – basically anything hat needs translating. Now, I’m actually very sceptical with things like this, it just sounds too good to be true. I am pleased, however, to report that it does actually work very well.

There are some caveats though; It doesn’t work well when moving (which rules out the street sign example in their AppStore images) although you can use it to scan text from a saved photo. It also only translates one word at a time so translating a full sentence not only takes a while, the grammar may be slightly inaccurate. You can, however, get a good idea of what you are reading.

To get a translation from what is in front of you simply line up the cross-hairs above the word you want to translate. A confirmation will show on screen as to what the app has read and also the translated version. Using a saved photo you simply tap each word, it highlights the word if thinks you selected, and then offers the translation. You can choose from 24 different languages in the app and these are being increased gradually. The latest update added 4 or 5 new languages too. If either of these methods ail for some reason you can also search for a translation by typing in the word manually.

It could be a useful app, it certainly works very well at detecting an translating words and is priced at a reasonable £2.99 ($4.99). There is one major flaw though – the translations need a data connection. Most people, myself included, turn off roaming data when abroad as the costs are simply extortionate. If you do decide to use the app abroad then expect to pay quite a bit for data usage or pray for a WiFi hotspot!

iSlash is incredibly simple in terms of what you need to do but also incredibly addictive and challenging. The basic premise is that you have a bunch of ninja stars bouncing around on a piece of wood and you have to slash away at the wood with your finger to reduce it to a certain size to complete the level – hit a star en-route and you need to start the level again. The first few levels are as simple as it sounds but this is just to get you used to the controls. It soon gets much trickier.

Further into the game you have different types of ninja stars – some that explode after a certain time into lots of smaller stars, some that almost disappear as ghosts and others that I’ve yet to unlock. You also get steel bars on the edge of the wood that you cannot slice through. Cutting off certain larger chunks of wood gives you bonuses such as extra lives, slow-motion for a few seconds and a random star that gets removed from play via a nice little explosion.

The looks, sounds and feel of the game are very very slick. It’s a joy to play, it’s perfect for simply picking up and playing while waiting for the wife to come out of Morrisons (you know, when they just ‘pop in for one or two things…). It’s just the right difficulty – not too easy that you complete it in no time but also not so hard that you get fed up and give up. There are also a good number of Game Center challenges and achievements to try to beat too. I’ve had this game for a few months now and it’s one that I still keep coming back to. At 59p (99c) it’s a bargain!

But if you are like most of us, who only play for buttons it is still a fun game that gets the pulse racing.

Poker Dealer Button Free is the first release from iPhone developers Pixelapps. It’s a simple app that helps players track the time per round together with the small and big blind amounts. It also tracks the number of rounds that have been played.

Peter Dickson, he of X-Factor voiceover fame, provides the commentary, a nice touch for an otherwise simple, but useful, free app.
