DOOM was the first true first person shoot ‘em up and whilst the graphics may seem poor now, 16 years ago it was revolutionary.

Now DOOM has made its first appearance on the iPhone. The game authors, ID Software, have chosen an unusual approach which has received mixed reviews from gamers.

Instead of being allowed to roam freely around the game map, DOOM Resurrection uses a control system which has you on virtual ‘rails’. Your progress through each level being pre-defined for simplicity of control.

IMG_0026Personally I haven’t found this too limiting but for the more avid gamer this won’t be ideal.

Control is limited to targetting the various enemies. This is done using the iPhone Tilt Sensors which control the sight reticule on screen. Other controls are the on-screen fire button and buttons that allow weapon selection and re-load.

IMG_0027Power-ups and health packs are dotted around each level and can be picked up by tapping them on-screen but you need to be quick. As you are ‘on-rails’ you can’t go back and collect one you miss and sometimes progress can be rapid with very short windows of opportunity.

The graphics are great, the alien enemies come thick and fast and the sound and music do a great job of adding to the atmosphere.

This is a great game for casual players but I don’t think it would have enough playability for serious gamers and for me, the £5.99 price tag is too high.

A full, free roam version of DOOM is rumoured to be coming and I’d suggest that may be a better option.
