Today is the day that Apple are to release the latest OS 3.0 for the iPhone. We have been using it in it’s beta test format for some time now, and have been eagerly awaiting the final live release.
The release is/was schedulled for today but despite connecting my iPhone to the Mac and checking for updates it is still reporting 2.2.1 as being the latest version. There are a number of rumours circulating that Apple wont release it until 10am ART (Apple Real Time same as California time) so maybe it will not turn up until gone 6pm in the UK and getting on for tomorrow morning in Asia.
When Apple do release it there is bound to be a mad rush to download it. I can foresee some server and bandwidth meltdowns when it dose get released to the public. I wonder if the update will be throttled in any way? 10,000,000 iPhone users plus the iPod Touch users all trying to update will crash the servers and kill bandwidth.
It would have made a lot of sense to roll out the update to Asia, Europe and the Americas during the day and lessen the impact on the servers. But then we are talking about Apple a company able to keep secrets (pretty much) and deliver to a timetable.
